Scripture Memorization.

In his book Spiritual Disciplines for the Christian Life, Donald Whitney describes three reasons we should memorize Scripture:

  1. Memorization gives you spiritual power - when Scripture is stored in our minds, it’s available for the Holy Spirit to bring to our minds when we need it. A Biblical truth brought to mind at the right time can be a weapon in a spiritual battle.

Psalm 119:11 - I have stored up your Word in my heart, that I might not sin against you.
Ephesians 6:11, 17 -  Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil….and take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.

  2. Memorization strengthens faith - it reinforces truth so that your trust will be in the Lord.

Proverbs 22:17-19 - Incline your ear, hear the words of the wise, and apply your heart to my knowledge for it will be pleasant if you keep them within you if all of them are ready on your lips that your trust may be in the Lord.
[Hear, Apply, Keep within you - so you will trust the Lord]

  3. Memorization provides a means for God’s guidance to ourselves and for witnessing and counseling others. The Holy Spirit retrieves scriptural truth from our memory to provide advice for our thoughts and questions and when others come to us for guidance and encouragement. Until the verses are hidden in the heart, they aren’t available in the mouth.

Psalm 119:24 - Your testimonies are my delight; they are my counselors.
